This book has been designed to introduce early literacy skills to young children as they learn to read and write. It also provides instruction that can be used with children who are not yet ready for formal reading and writing instruction, to lay the foundations for future literacy success. The weekly and daily guidelines develop children's vocabulary knowledge and phonemic awareness skills (in particular blending and segmenting skills) and introduce phonics knowledge in a way that scaffolds the development of pre-literacy skills towards more formal literacy instruction. The lessons are structured to provide a sequenced order of skill development.
