Each book comprises altogether 100 photocopiable lessons, each of which follows a consistent lesson format.
Book 1 of the Lifeboat Scheme is for the beginner. It introduces the alphabet and distinguishes the vowels and the consonants, in a series of individually designed lessons.
Book 2 introduces the third vowel, e, and subsequently o and u. Work on Syllables (One or Two, Open and Closed, and Syllable Breakdown) and Compound Words is covered. Following the introduction of k and -ck, seven blends which include the letter r are worked upon.
Book 3 includes lessons which introduce three-consonant blends, and blends with the letter i. Exercises with al and -all follow, some double letter work, Vowel -y, Suffixes and further Syllable Division.
Book 4 continues the expansion of knowledge and practice in letter combinations such as i-e, a-e, e-e, o-e. Further blend work is covered including end blends.
Book 5 covers a variety of letters and letter combinations that can often make differing or unusual sounds: qu, squ, ee, oo, ar, er, etc.
Book 6 contains a further variety of letter combinations are covered: Regular Final Syllables, and ea, ee, ai, ain, ir, oa, -ow, igh, and others.
Book 7 is approaching the climax of the Scheme, so more complex letter combinations and sounds are covered here. These include Odd Plurals, 'Schwa', different ch sounds, ph, -gh, oi, -oy, ear, an, -ant, etc.
Book 8 covers specific topics including ou (7 Sounds), -ey, ure, -al, -el, -us and others.
Books 9 and 10 present some key spelling rules and other intricate spelling patterns which are particularly essential for whole class work and which complement the topics in Books 4 to 7.
